Vintage Solid Steel: Ken Nordine - Talking All That Word Jazz (2008 Edition)

MP3, Music, Solid Steel August 30th, 2008

“You may not know Ken Nordine by name or face, but you’ll almost certainly recognize his voice.” A very special outing for the Vintage Solid Steel collection for your listening enjoyment, originally broadcast in 1998 but extended and edited for 2008 by an exacting Strictly Kev who doesn’t know when to say ‘it’s finished!’  Also included via the podcast is ‘Strictly’s How To Be A Jazz Beatnik Hipster’ Parts 1 & 3 (the absence of part 2 is explained within) to add some additional sheen to this highly polished Vintage Steel. You know it’s all good, so what are you waiting for? Words from Strictly and links after the jump.

Vintage Solid Steel: DK - More From The Vaults

MP3, Music, Solid Steel August 27th, 2008

Time is precious as they say. We say - never a truer word spoken. We’re keeping it direct and to the point this time round, not too much in the way of reading material (from the worldy wordsmith Strictly Kev, as always)… but it’s about the tunes, you all shout! Good show, as DK’s back again, with a more recent selection from 2002, putting it together in his own jazzy-genre-jumping way. Broken beat was in full swing and represented here by Domu’s remix of the Cinematic Orchestra and the 4 Hero anthem ‘Hold It Down’, Mo Wax was winding down (remember Skelf?) and mash ups were about to flood the scene.

Vintage Solid Steel: Coldcut - Best Of The K Mixes Part 2

MP3, Music, Solid Steel August 3rd, 2008

We return to the K Mixes archive this week and dig out four storming sets from Coldcut and PC including Old School Hip Hop in the disco rap mould, cut ups galore as only Coldcut do, a Jazz Rap, a Native Tongues era Hip Hop mix and a Go Go session from PC. All I can see when I listen to these mixes is London club culture at the dawn of the 90’s, completely mashed up musically, rife with sample plundering to the point where the samplers were sampling other samplers.

Boris, BosBos - Ambience

BosBos, MP3, Music July 28th, 2008

BORIS, BOSBOS - AMBIENCE
Japanese group BORIS are as eclectic as they come. Listen to any one of the albums from their extensive back catalogue and you’ll often find it quite different to the last; drone, metal, psychedelic, noise, sludge… something for everyone, you might say. One area of sound that BORIS really do excel at is the more calm, reflective end of the musical spectrum. Wistful guitar solos and distant drums prove that BORIS is more than just another noise band. These ambient moments often get lost on rarer earlier releases which are yet to be sampled by those new to the group, possibly enjoying Smile, the latest longplayer by Atsuo, Takeshi and Wata. AMBIENCE is presented here for your listening enjoyment, designed to fill in the gaps of the lighter yet no less powerful sound of BORIS. All audio and artwork manipulated by BosBos.

Vintage Solid Steel: PC Via Josephine/Coldcut Meet Jean Jacques Perry

MP3, Music, Solid Steel July 21st, 2008

A mixed bag (aren’t they all ‘mixed’ bags?) here, but quality assured nonetheless. PC returns to the shores of bosbos.net yet again with ‘Via Josephine’, and we’re more than happy to accomodate him. And what’s this? Jean Jacques Perry turning up along with Coldcut for a natter? The only thing to improve this wonderful listening experience would be a nice cup of tea. Go make yourself one while you’re downloading the goodness, and make us one too while you’re there, won’t you?

Vintage Solid Steel: DJ Food Vs DJ Vadim

MP3, Music, Solid Steel July 4th, 2008

Vintage Steel brings vintage DJ Vadim. A big-hitter on the dusty beats and breaks scene back in the mid 90s, Russia’s finest carved a niche for himself early on by utilising unique sounds that other producers hadn’t thought to load into their samplers back then - it seems Vadim had a lot of squeaky door hinges and no cans of WD40 handy to fix them! Factor in a record collection that would put several record stores’ stock to shame (although that probably isn’t as applicable a statement as it used to be, especially in today’s digital music ’revolution’), it’s little wonder that he has had a string of critically acclaimed albums and 12-inches over the years. Part 1 of this Steel can be heard via the Solid Steel Podcast (04/07/2008 show), and a download link for Part 2 can be found after the jump. So sit back and read on as Strictly Kev reminisces another tale of Solid Steel past.

Vintage Solid Steel: King Megatrip - I Must Insist You Eat Steel/Coldcut - Planet Of The Apes Special

MP3, Music, Solid Steel June 19th, 2008

(Introduction courtesy of Strictly Kev) For this week’s vintage session we turn the tables over to Solid Steel’s US ambassador: King Megatrip. For those who don’t know, Megatrip has been first a fan, then a show archivist, amassing possibly the world’s biggest collection of past Solid Steels. He has also had guest mixes featured but most importantly he is the creator of the Soundbank, a huge resource of spoken word samples that he has supplied exclusively to us for years. If you listen to Solid Steel then you’ve heard speech from one of over a hundred volumes of spoken word he has collected for us from every source imaginable. This has earned him official Solid Steel membership, always present - lurking in the shadows even if sightings of him are rare. We’ll turn it over to KM himself to explain his choice for this entry…

Vintage Solid Steel: J. Rocc - Syndromes 2

MP3, Music, Solid Steel May 27th, 2008

Not much time to spare this time round, but don’t think this entry from the Vintage Steel treasure chest is any less special because of it. Don’t take our word - just peep that deliciously funky tracklist! J. Rocc has been doing his hip hop thing since the mid-eighties; starting out with PSK, he went on to found the Beat Junkies in the early nineties (alongside Melo-D and Rhettmatic) and continues to go from strength to strength by appearing on (and with) the Stones Throw Records hitlist. Hump that jump for some brief words from Strictly Kev and your download link/tracklist. Finally, don’t forget to dial in to the Ninja Tune site for this week’s podcast (23/05/2008 show), featuring J Mountain. Say Ho!
